In therapy, I strive to create space where clients may explore their inner landscapes and make sense of themselves in their relationships and larger social contexts. I believe that most people have parts of themselves that are affirmed and other parts that have gone underground — perhaps as a result of relational injury, lack of environmental mirroring, or trauma. I seek to develop a supportive relationship where clients can begin to see the unseen and speak the unspeakable and, with self compassion and courage, work to integrate those parts and reduce suffering and experience deeper connection and meaning. That describes, in part, the process of exploratory therapy but what is a session actually like? We talk. People share their stories— maybe the latest relationship entanglement, feeling burdened with perfectionism, dissecting a racial microaggression that happened in class, or a painful memory from elementary school. I’m curious about nuance and felt experience and I reflect and ask questions to help deepen understanding. I work through psychodynamic, intersectional, and multicultural lenses. I have worked extensively with undergraduate and graduate students in both domestic and international settings. And, I have experience working with a range of presenting concerns including anxiety, stress, complex identity, immigration, and loss. I’ve been described as kind, patient, inquisitive, and discerning. Prior to moving to Princeton in 2015, I lived in China for five years during which I worked as a therapist at Community Center Shanghai and NYU Shanghai. I am originally from Taiwan and immigrated to the US as a child. My biracial and bicultural heritage along with my immigrant and expatriate experiences have created a particular interest in working with international students, immigrants, people who identify as mixed race, and students either preparing for or returning from studying abroad. My private practice is conveniently located walking distance from Princeton University campus on 344 Nassau Street. I work extensively with graduate and undergraduate students and accept PU student health insurance (students are responsible for their $10 copay).

I see one of the most important roles as a therapist to be putting in the work to earn someone’s trust and walking beside them as an accomplice on their path towards growth. I don’t believe that people are “broken” or “need to be fixed”, but rather that somewhere within every person lies the capacity to generate change. I believe this change begins by finding someone trustworthy to support them through this process. And—that being kinder and gentler towards ourselves goes a long way to building the foundation for this change to occur. My experiences span across 15 years, with the scope of my direct work supporting clients in their exploration of gender expression/transition, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/loss and more- all within Allegheny County. I am also happy to provide evaluations and letters for Gender Affirming surgeries, Green Card Status, and Emotional Support Animals. The world is an often hard place to be, and my goal is to create a space for softness to occur. To not only listen but to hear and understand. To respect through accountability. To address struggles through processing and also through action leading to systemic change.

For more than three decades, I’ve helped adults navigate the challenges that can make life feel overwhelming including anxiety, panic, chronic stress, depression, and insomnia. If you’re exhausted from trying to manage everything on your own, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to keep pushing through without support. My approach is steady, practical, and compassionate. Hello! Throughout my ten years in the mental health field, I have worked in settings that range from inpatient to outpatient, as well as school and mobile. My clients represent all stages across the lifespan. My passion is helping clients to address a variety of needs, many of which stem from prior traumatic or dysfunctional patterns, as well as to help them find a more fulfilling balance. I often see clients suffer from imposter and/or Wonder Woman syndrome, frequently manifesting as suicidal ideation, depression, and/or anxiety. I use an integrated approach rooted in feminist theory, and that focuses on how trauma currently shows up in our lives. I find this is crucial to break the cycle. I believe that clients of all genders are harmed by societal norms, roles, and stigmas; we all can benefit from working to break down those barriers for the sake of healthy emotional expression. There is nothing better in my line of work than watching clients heal and grow to become thrivers - their own champions. Please reach out to discuss a potential relationship!

Hi, I’m Kiara, I’m the therapist behind Lunar Counseling! I work with teens and adults who feel overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, and trauma. I have found for many individuals, having a therapist to talk through issues can be a gamechanger for their mental health. So, I use my seven years of therapy experience to guide people just like you as you work through your mental health challenges and regain control of your life. To get started, your next step is to schedule a 15-min phone consultation to see if we are a good fit. You don’t have to let things get worse or stay feeling numb and overwhelmed.
