Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Cooper Mental Health Counseling was developed by its founder Dr. Marty Cooper. There are several principles that guide our work. We believe that in order to help you we need to understand your concern from your perspective. We believe that you can feel better. Our focus is on your whole life and by maintaining this focus you have the potential to radically change your life. Although we recognize that therapy may be difficult at times, we believe that you have the possibility of finding something awesome on the other side. We will work tirelessly with you to help you develop a road map that may guide you for years beyond your work with us.
I BELIEVE THAT EACH PERSON is a mosaic of experiences, identities, and values and I will tailor our work to your unique needs and goals. I am attentive to your story as an individual or couple as well as broader cultural and sociopolitical dynamics that may impact your experience. I am collaborative and not mysterious - I will share my thinking with you, explain what I believe you may find helpful and why, and welcome your feedback on what is and is not working for you. I WILL DRAW UPON MY TIME studying biology at Harvard to consider and share with you how biological elements such as sleep science, nutrition, stress response, and more may be impacting your wellbeing. I also am happy to discuss how your sexual health intersects with physical and emotional health, and have several years of experience in sex and relationship counseling. If you struggle with any aspect of sex ranging from desire, arousal, accessing pleasure, self-consciousness, or trauma, I am here to acknowledge the taboos around sex in our society, provide a space for open conversation individually or as a couple, and help you get what you want out of your sexuality and sex life. MY CLINICAL STYLE prioritizes validation and fostering a safe environment to navigate vulnerable topics together. Many people tend to invalidate their own emotions - if this sounds like you, I will support you in developing kinder self-talk and holding space for your feelings. We will uncover insight into why you may be stuck in certain patterns or cycles that are not serving you as an individual or in a relationship and use this knowledge to build new ways of moving forward and living your life how you want to. WE WILL REFLECT ON what gives you fulfillment and how to create a life full of meaning and enjoyment. At the same time, we will explore different tools, including somatic methods and emotional skills, that you can use to reduce stress, and anxiety, reshape negative thinking, improve tension-filled relationships, and overall work towards being happier, healthier, and more productive. We may think of the mind as something intangible, but it lives in the body. By learning to support your mental processes and physical well-being, you can achieve balance and peace. No matter where you are on this journey, I will meet you there and support you.
Our group psychotherapy practice offers help with anxiety, depression, relationships, sleep (including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia), eating disorders, body image, grief, addiction, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Our clients tend to be people who are successful in many ways and feel overwhelmed, lost, alone, or in need of some self-esteem building. We particularly love working with college students because by nature they are figuring out who they are and want to be, and the work we do together can be such an important and exciting part of that process. We welcome people from all backgrounds and are LGBTQ+-affirming. Please feel free to reach out - we would love to get to know you!

I believe healing starts with genuine connection, and it’s an honor to be part of that process with you. My passion is helping people discover a fuller, more meaningful life, and I’m committed to walking alongside you every step of the way. With evidence-based tools and a compassionate approach, we’ll create a nurturing space for you to explore your values, hopes, and goals at your own pace. My intention is to always meet you exactly where you are and empower you to experience more freedom, presence and joy in your life. I work with individuals who want to understand their story more deeply; exploring childhood experiences, recognizing patterns, and healing from attachment wounds. Using evidence-based tools and a compassionate, meet-you-where-you-are approach, I’m here to support you along the way. Therapy is about understanding yourself more fully and finding the confidence to live in alignment with what matters most to you. The hardest part is often getting started. If this resonates, let’s talk. I’d be honored to hear your story and support you as you create the life you’re ready to step into.
Share your college struggle with me, and I will provide you with a safe space to grow. Privately and at your pace we will explore who you are inside, carefully unpacking what is at the root of every worry, your sadness, anger, or any other uncomfortable experience during this initial foray into adulthood. We will suss out your internal conflicts by exploring your attempts to master problems of the past by repeating patterns in the present, working your known issues toward resolution. No trauma is too great or too small for us to talk about. Our efforts will impart more freedom and equanimity in your choices, and open you up to feel more passionate and alive. I use an active relational psychoanalytic approach to therapeutically make meaning of psychological and emotional difficulties through an ongoing conversation. You simply talk about what is bothering you and free associate to your life. Collaboratively, we will examine how and why your patterns in living, though intelligent adaptations and defenses that once helped you to survive, may no longer serve you, so that you may accept and care for yourself and have a richer, fuller life. Our alliance will help you find balance in work, love and play, and will develop your agency to manage every life challenge with autonomy and self-confidence. Psychoanalysis offers lasting change, and finding just the right therapist for you is essential to the process. Reach out for a free consultation today to see if we make a good fit.

I work with individuals who are curious to pursue change - whether this be by reflecting on obstacles, with a specific goal in mind, or simply because something feels as if it is not "working" for them. One does not have to be 100% motivated to use therapy well, instead, s/he/they can come to sessions with any sense of willingness to explore.
We are a virtual telehealth practice offering services to teens and young adults looking for support with anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship issues, and other concerns. Please reach out if you'd like to schedule a consult call to see if we're a good fit!
I'M A FIRM BELIEVER in the health of one's mind being a crucial factor in their ability to meet the demands of everyday life. It becomes a harder task to address stressful situations if you're already not feeling well. Think about moments when you might not have been able to focus at work, successfully study for an exam, or even effectively communicate your concerns to others due to how you felt mentally and physically. MY WORK AS A THERAPIST ENTAILS consistent problem-solving, reasoning, exploring, investigating, learning, and healing. I provide compassionate, supportive, encouraging, and challenging therapy that facilitates and promotes growth for people who seek to improve the quality of their lives. Reflecting on one's actions, highlighting the importance of self-awareness, and offering advisement on ways to improve the overall health of one's lifestyle are a few ways by which I aid individuals in achieving an enhanced experience of life. THROUGH THESE MEANS, the ability to focus at work becomes a bit easier, studying for an exam is not such a harrowing feat and effectively expressing your needs feels like more of a natural practice. All the while, paying special attention to your improved health both mentally and physically.
