The students I work best with are thoughtful, self-aware, and trying hard to “do things right.” You care about your future. You want meaningful relationships. You want to succeed. But you may also feel pressure from family, academics, social media, or your own expectations. Maybe you overthink everything. Maybe you procrastinate and then criticize yourself for it. Maybe you feel lonely even when you are surrounded by people. Victoria Duru is a board-certified nurse practitioner in psychiatry and family medicine who started her career as a young staff nurse over 15 years ago and worked her way up. She received her Master’s of Science in Nursing from Walden University in Minnesota, Minneapolis. After graduating she worked at a Correctional facility in Houston, TX. Her experience demonstrated the gap between medical and psychiatric care, and how the mind/body connection is often overlooked. The gap in care motivated Victoria to pursue a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certificate at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley so that she can develop a practice that integrates medicine and mental health for the most effective treatment.
